Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) is used for the treatment of breast cancer in women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer, in which the cancer has spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body, and in women who have ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Nolvadex has anti-estrogenic, anti-androgenic, and anti-androgenic effects and is also used to reduce the risk of breast cancer in men. Nolvadex is not recommended for use in women who are breast cancer-free. Nolvadex may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
The following are some of the side effects of Nolvadex. Some of these side effects may be temporary or may be permanent. If these are serious or last more than a week, seek medical attention immediately.
Nausea and vomiting may also occur. Nolvadex may increase the risk of developing breast cancer in women who use it.
Gastrointestinal problems, such as diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, may occur. These side effects are less likely to be permanent.
Paresthesia or numbness of the face, lips, tongue, or throat may also occur. Nolvadex may also cause a rash or hives. Nolvadex may cause a severe decrease or loss of vision.
Fever or flu-like symptoms may occur. Nolvadex may also cause a severe skin rash, hives, or blistering of the skin.
Seizures may occur. Nolvadex is not recommended for use in patients who have a seizure disorder. Nolvadex is not recommended for use in patients who have a history of epilepsy.
A painful erection lasting 4 or more hours should be reported immediately.
Nolvadex is contraindicated in patients who:
• Have had breast cancer or a family history of breast cancer
• Have had an organ transplant.
• Are allergic to tamoxifen or any of the other ingredients in Nolvadex
• Have ever had an allergic reaction to tamoxifen or any of the other ingredients in Nolvadex
• Are taking certain medications, including blood thinners or anti-coagulants
• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, plan to get pregnant or are breastfeeding.
